If you could be any color what would you be?
Now that you’re a color - why on earth would you want to be that color?
What’s the movie or television show you watched?
Saturday Night Live.
Was it any good and should I watch it?
This week’s episode was a bit lackluster, as far as laughs go. It was great to see what was really a cavalcade of old SNL favorites (Fred Armisen and Kristen Wiig) and then some (the Anchorman crew!). Weekend Update had some solid jokes that you might want to check out.
How many times a week do you say LOL out loud?
Zero. I never say LOL.
If you could have any job in the world, what would it be?
Social media guru/photographer for a winery! Or, perhaps, Benedict Cumberbatch’s agent.
If you watch Doctor Who, which Doctor is your favorite?
Tenth Doctor. David Tennant was and is so perfect in that role. Also, in his very first episode, he quoted The Lion King beautifully, so I was on board with him quickly.
If you don’t watch Doctor Who, why the fuck not?
Yeah, really, I mean, what are you waiting for?!
Tacos or burritos?
Tacos! Shredded, salty beef inside with manchego cheese and some blend of red and green chile salsa… I NEED TACOS NOW.
What’s the nicest thing anyone has ever said to you or done for you?
I have been the beneficiary of so many generous, amazing acts, that to pick out one would be awful. Should I mention the time when my third grade teacher took me under her wing soon after my father died and took me out to the mall with her daughters so that my mom could have a break? Should I mention the time my best friend, Mandy, gave me a surprise all-expenses-paid trip to Disneyland on the eve of my wedding? Or the time she helped us move up to Washington just a few months ago? Or, perhaps the time when a classmate I’d only crossed paths with briefly thought of me when she met Madeleine Albright and got her to sign a copy of her book “Prague Winter” for me and send it to me? Or what about the time my in-laws helped us move into two separate apartments over the course of a single summer? Or what about the time my brother-in-law moved in with us so we could make rent and not have to live in the basement of an accused child molester? Or what about the time my sister helped me move across the state, surviving an allergy to cats and a flat tire on the way? And I can’t forget any of the amazing moments in which my parents have been unbelievably giving of themselves even in the light of my cockamamiest ideas and passions. I just keep thinking of more moments, the longer I sit here with this paragraph building. Nope, I refuse to choose one.
What are you supposed to be doing right now (because we all know you’re procrastinating on Tumblr)?
I should be showering and then heading to a craft store to buy ornament painting supplies. It’s going to be a solar system theme!
I am tagging the people who always pop up on my dash and make me smile:
Our apple orchard adventure yesterday inspired Joe and Sam to have a week full of pork and apple-based dinners. Their idea was based on the iconic image of a roasted pig with an apple in its mouth. So, the challenge has been put to Sam, a really amazing chef, to make different dishes based on these two items all week. I’ll be keeping you updated with the recipes and pictures, so I hope you’ll enjoy it with me!
(I’m not a huge fan of pork, but maybe this will change it for me.)
Do you have any ideas for how to brighten up a home that essentially only has one bay window, and that's the main source of natural light?
Mirrors! You can get all sorts of cheap mirrors from IKEA and put them in interesting, strategic arrangements to pull light further into your home. And you’ll never regret having a few more mirrors around! And sheer curtains. Try not to close that light out, ever.
Also, of course, carpet, furniture, and other colors can make a big difference. What color is the carpet/flooring? I always go straight for whites and yellows when brightening up a space.
Of course, all of these cost money. It can also help to move furniture, but I don’t know what kind of layout you have. I haven’t seen pics of your new place yet, except the outside!
What do you make of fulfillment? What's the most fulfilling thing you've ever done? Do you have plans, that you know aren't fulfilling, but need to be done anyway? How do you cope with that?
Oh boy, you may as well be asking me about how to find happiness. To me, they are pretty similar. The most fulfilling thing I’ve ever done was spending a year leading the Model UN team at NMSU. It’s cliché, I know, but when students say Model UN was the best experience they had in university, they really mean it. In particular, that last year was fulfilling for me, because I learned how to really lead a semi-directionless group. I say “semi” because we have a general mold we always tried to work with every year, but our advisor went on sabbatical that year. I was elected to take on part of his role as an educator, while also working as a team member. I taught others about speaking, researching, and writing, all of which I had spent the previous 4 years honing.
Unfortunately, I don’t have any plans that I can fulfill without others’ input. Mostly, I need a job. I’m not feeling too specific about it, to be honest, considering I have enough education to have gotten a really cool job a decade ago. Not being able to fulfill that is taking a toll on my ability to enjoy life, and does make relations with my husband tense sometimes.
Something you didn’t quite ask, but I have to address: I have things I’d like to do because they would give me fulfillment, but they are not plans, nor do they need to happen. I’d like to join a Toastmaster’s group here in Pullman so I can start practicing giving speeches again. I’d like to take more photos professionally, though I’m a bit scared to get back on the horse here in Pullman since I don’t know many people.
One thing I am currently fulfilling that needs to happen is losing weight. That is going well.
